About The Art
Blood, flesh, stickiness, visceral structures, scar tissue, and discomfort all feature within my work. I paint, spray, stick, mould, and cut canvases, creating contemporary abstract expressionist artworks.
My work is inspired by artists such as Jade Fadojutimi, Albert Oehlen, Amira Ashong, and Lisa Baker.

The aim of my work is to self-express. I feel,
I make. In the future, I would like to create large-scale works, which are a maze on their own with never-ending details to find and get lost in.
As a former Art Teacher, I like to incorporate “play” into my work a lot, meaning there is no apparent reason or rhyme to it. Though playful, my work also has meaning – as a woman with pain; the red is the most prominent aspect in my paintings and I hope any person with pain will resonate with this.
BIOgraphy

Isioma Joy Lee-Thompson, born 1995, grew up in Berlin, Germany until the age of 12. She moved to the North-West of England and attended secondary school and college in the same area. Having had a creative streak since early childhood, Isioma studied GCSE Art at St Joseph’s RC High School, A-Level Fine Art at Runshaw College and Mixed Media Fine Art Ba Honours at the University of Westminster. Her work, while attending Westminster, was influenced by the grotesque emotion she associated when coming into contact with public displays of affection. After exploring various mediums such as sound and video editing, painting, animation, installation, performance, print-making and a combination of all, Isioma began painting in a loose, abstract-style manner. This later continued to be her main form of art, though the colours changed from neon/fluorescent to darker, deeper red tones, the premise has stayed the same. Layers, playing, mark-making, colour exploration, and pain exist on every surface.
Isioma went on to study her PGCE in Secondary Education in Art and Design at The Institute of Education, University College London. She went on to teach art for 4 years to secondary and sixth form students in North-West London, during which she continued to further explore her own practice in ceramics and painting. After leaving her teaching job to become a full-time carer, Isioma found a brilliant studio opportunity with neo: artists in North-West England, developing and furthering her practice through frequent art-making. She hopes to engage with her local community and exhibit with her neo: peers in the future.

These digital drawings were inspired by a conversation about signing my work. Never having had a signature short enough to be artwork worthy, I decided to play around and through this, i discovered a natural flow for made-up lettering. Being bilingual and eager to learn a third language, has been a driving factor in loving languages and the beauty of their written aspect.

‘Arab-ish 1’ Oct 2023
Digital painting. 1800x1200mpx
Digital £5/A4/A3 print £20/£35

The semi-erratic nature of these letters came natural to me, directly linking to the abstract, play-like movements used in my paintings. The choice of colour combinations were deliberate - a high contrast background and font would stand out and be almost irritating. If my work can elicit any emotion of discomfort from the viewer, I have been successful.

Commissions:
I have an immense amount of fun when creating artwork for someone else. As an abstract, expressionist artist, there is no right or wrong way to create a commission, however, I like working with people to turn their visions into reality. In order to create a piece of work I ask for the following things: Surface (canvas/wooden sheet/paper), Size (variable), Colour Scheme (although there are many colours and mediums used in my work, I can create paintings where there is focus on a colour of your choice, mixed in with others). If you like a particular existing artwork of mine and want something similar, please let me know.
No matter your preference, if you have any queries or would like to find out more, please feel free to contact me via email or Instagram. Payments are made via PaylPal or bank transfer.
Please note: A 50% deposit is required prior to starting any artwork and the other 50% once completed.
